News Concerning Illegal Immigration and Paying Taxes
|
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- President Bush on Thursday urged Congress to complete
work on an immigration compromise that includes a temporary-worker program and would
allow some illegal immigrants to eventually apply for citizenship...
MarketWatch.news
Permanent residents may be denied US citizenship if they have not properly filed
their tax returns for at least the five years just prior to the date they submit
their applications to naturalize to become US citizens. Noncitizens who are living
and working in the United States are expected to file income tax returns for every
year that they earn enough to have a tax liability, no matter what their immigration
status is. Even undocumented persons who are working "under the table" are expected
to file, and may be able to get a "taxpayer identification number' (TIN) from the
IRS (apply on IRS form W-7) in order to file the income tax return...

A temporary worker program would ease the financial burden on state and local governments
by replacing illegal workers with lawful taxpayers. And above all, the temporary
worker program would add to the security of this country by making certain we know
who's coming into this country and why they're here...

would have to pay a penalty for breaking the law, pay back taxes, learn English,
and would have to "wait in line" behind legal migrants...
BBC news

worker program if they already have a job. The special status would last for three
years and could be renewed once, for a total stay of six years. If temporary workers
failed to stay employed or broke the law, they would be sent home, Bush said...
CNN news
The immigrants have been able to file since 1996 when the IRS started issuing
special
tax numbers for people living and working illegally in this country. Experts say
the 8 million to 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States contribute untold
billions each year in payroll taxes...
The San Diego
Union-Tribune
Some illegal immigrants have long paid taxes through special identification numbers
issued by the Internal Revenue Service for people who are not eligible for Social

I would like to remind our readers of a law was adopted in 1996 allowing the IRS
to grant all interested parties, including those without the status of a legal immigrant,
an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Millions of people were granted
this document, which resulted in a sharp increase in the number of personal income
tax declarations (Form 1040) during the second half of 1990s. Correspondingly, the
federal budget benefited significantly from illegal working immigrants.
